Moslem Azamfar, the project manager, told MNA that his system converts digital information into Braille line by line; “in this device, Braille characters are placed on a circular-linear path that moves under the hand of the user who is sitting still and can be read by touch,” he explained.
Azamfar noted the difference between this system and refreshable braille display, saying “the first advantage of this system is its affordability value. The computers already used for Braille conversion cost around $4000, but this system only costs around $600-900.”
He went on to add, “this system also has the ability to convert digital data into Braille line by line, while the computers used by the visually impaired are not capable of line-by-line conversion. In fact, this system allows for a quicker and highly accurate reading.”
“This system has not been commercialized yet but we are hoping that its production will be an effective step toward further facilitation of reading for the visually impaired,” he said.
Azamfar’s project has been awarded first prize in innovation category at the 18th Kharazmi Youth Festival and is in line for being patented.
